Fishing Line

Seeking Webben Etymology

This is a casting call

for the leading lines in a poem.

You must define “gossamer” and “reel” for me. Are you really fine

as a cobweb? Do spiders web

the corncobs before or after

you’re woven as fish traps? Or is the gossip true? Are you finest

at catching not salmon

nor rainbow trout nor true trout

but the air? Can you do without a feather fly? Do you cling

to the breeze, tasting

the wind’s oceanic direction

the way fish taste their homewaters home? Can you handle ballooning?

In air? Through metaphor?

Of responsibility? Are you the line

for the job? The payment is exposure.
